PM Modi says Malaysia visit will boost economic and cultural ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said his two-day visit to Malaysia would significantly strengthen economic and cultural ties between India and Malaysia, marking a meaningful step in the bilateral partnership between the two maritime neighbours.

After concluding his visit and departing for India, PM Modi thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the government and the people of Malaysia for their warmth and hospitality. He described the trip as his first international visit of 2026 and said it reflected the deep friendship between the two countries.

Sharing moments from the visit on social media platform X, Modi recalled that he could not attend the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia last year but had promised to visit at the earliest opportunity. He said the visit had created fresh momentum for cooperation in trade, investment, innovation and cultural exchanges.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) termed the visit “memorable,” saying it produced tangible outcomes that would further strengthen India–Malaysia ties. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the warmth of the engagement and the strong cultural foundation of the relationship.

During the visit, PM Modi interacted with top CEOs from both countries at the India–Malaysia CEO Forum, calling it a platform that opened new avenues for business collaboration. He also held detailed talks with PM Anwar Ibrahim at Seri Perdana, reviewing cooperation in infrastructure, energy, IT, biotechnology, defence, artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Both leaders agreed to deepen collaboration in security, digital technologies and high-tech industries. Modi also underlined the importance of people-to-people ties, noting initiatives such as a Social Security Agreement, a gratis e-visa for tourism, and the rollout of UPI in Malaysia. Plans for expanded university exchanges and skill development were also discussed.

The Prime Minister also engaged with the Indian diaspora, met Indian-origin leaders and honoured INA veteran Jeyaraj Raja Rao, reinforcing the cultural and historical bonds between the two nations.
