PM Modi to be guest of honour at Mauritius’ 57th National Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the guest of honour at the 57th National Day celebrations of Mauritius, as announced by the country’s Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, in its parliament.
Addressing the parliament, Ramgoolam stated, “In the context of the celebrations of the 57th anniversary of our country’s independence, I am pleased to inform the House that, following my invitation, His Excellency, Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations.”
He further emphasized the significance of Modi’s visit, highlighting the deep and historic ties between the two nations. “It is a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality. Despite his tight schedule and recent visits to Paris and the United States, he has graciously accepted our invitation. His visit is a testament to the close relationship between our two nations,” Ramgoolam added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had congratulated Ramgoolam on his electoral victory in November last year. In a post on X, Modi wrote, “Had a warm conversation with my friend @Ramgoolam_Dr, congratulating him on his historic electoral victory. I wished him great success in leading Mauritius and extended an invitation to visit India. Looking forward to working closely together to strengthen our special and unique partnership.”
Over the years, India, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, has consistently reinforced its strong and enduring partnership with Mauritius. In July 2024, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar visited Mauritius, marking one of his first diplomatic trips in his current term. During the visit, he engaged in extensive discussions with both then-Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Ramgoolam on key bilateral matters, including development cooperation, defence and maritime security, trade relations, and people-to-people ties.
As part of his visit, Jaishankar, alongside the Mauritius leadership, inaugurated several High Impact Community Development Projects, exchanged MoUs, and distributed the first Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to two seventh-generation Indian-origin Mauritians.
During this engagement, 12 community development projects covering infrastructure, education, healthcare, public amenities, and sports were virtually inaugurated. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for Mauritius in its pursuit of economic progress and national development.
The upcoming visit by Prime Minister Modi is expected to further bolster India-Mauritius ties, fostering greater collaboration across various sectors and reinforcing the strong diplomatic and cultural bond between the two nations.
