PM Modi arrives in London for two-day UK visit focused on trade, strategic ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London on Wednesday evening for a high-profile two-day visit aimed at deepening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and finalizing a long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Invited by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, this marks PM Modi’s fourth visit to the United Kingdom. In a message before departure, Modi stated, “I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III.”
The visit focuses on strengthening ties across trade, innovation, defence, education, health, and climate cooperation, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Discussions will also cover regional and global issues of mutual concern.
Central to the visit is the proposed India-UK FTA, under negotiation for the past three years. The deal aims to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK and lower tariffs on 90% of British goods, including whisky and cars. It could double bilateral trade to over $120 billion by 2030.
PM Modi is also expected to raise India’s concerns over Khalistani extremism in the UK. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said New Delhi has flagged the issue with British authorities.
Modi and Starmer have already met twice this year—during the G20 Summit in Brazil and G7 in Italy—and have held several phone discussions. The current visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
