PM Modi arrives in Washington for talks with President Trump
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a two-day visit at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. His visit aims to strengthen the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States.
“Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet,” PM Modi posted on X.
Braving the cold, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside Blair House to greet him, and he responded with warm acknowledgments.
During his stay, PM Modi will reside at Blair House, a historic residence across from the White House, known for hosting international dignitaries. The 70,000-square-foot building has accommodated world leaders, presidents, and royalty, serving as an important venue for diplomatic discussions.
Before departing for the US, PM Modi emphasized that this visit would reinforce bilateral cooperation and open new opportunities for collaboration.
“This visit will build upon the successes of our previous engagements and develop a roadmap to further deepen our partnership in key areas such as technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience. We will work together to benefit our people and contribute to a better global future,” he stated.
Since Trump’s re-election, the two leaders have spoken twice over the phone. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India at Trump’s inauguration and later met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He also attended the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ meeting in January 2025.
Before arriving in Washington, PM Modi completed a three-day visit to France, where he co-hosted the Artificial Intelligence Summit with President Emmanuel Macron. On Tuesday, he met with US Vice President JD Vance to discuss shared interests, including US investment in India’s energy sector. According to a White House statement, discussions included potential support for India’s clean energy transition using US nuclear technology.
