President Murmu lauds India-Slovakia relations in Bratislava

President Droupadi Murmu praised the Indian community in Slovakia for their contributions to the country’s development and the strengthening of India-Slovakia relations, during her address to the Indian diaspora in Bratislava.

“In all my interactions with Slovak leaders, I was pleased to hear their recognition of the Indian community’s hard work,” said President Murmu. “There is great respect for the valuable role you play in Slovakia’s progress.”

She highlighted India’s inclusive growth story and emphasized that the love for Indian culture, from Yoga and Ayurveda to Indian cuisine, is growing in Slovakia. The popularity of India’s heritage reflects the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations, she added.

Murmu noted that Slovak translations of the Upanishads would further connect the Slovak people to India’s ancient wisdom. She lauded the Indian diaspora for serving as cultural ambassadors, strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing India’s image abroad.

Earlier, she and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini planted a Linden tree, Slovakia’s national tree, at the City Park in Nitra. Murmu shared details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative—a campaign blending climate action with tribute to motherhood—which President Pellegrini appreciated and expressed interest in emulating.

President Murmu was also conferred an Honoris Causa Doctorate by Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra. In her speech, she reflected on India’s commitment to education, social justice, women empowerment, and cultural diversity.

She underlined India’s dual commitment to modern technological progress and ancient philosophical roots, noting how Indian wisdom resonates even in Slovakia.

During her visit, Murmu attended an exhibition of paintings by Slovak children, part of the long-running art competition titled “Beauty Hidden in Fairy Tales – India through the Eyes of Slovak Children.” She also enjoyed a puppet show on the Ramayan and attended a banquet at the historic Bratislava Castle, where Slovak musicians performed the Indian National Anthem.

This marks the first visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in nearly 30 years, underscoring a renewed commitment to enhancing bilateral ties.
