Putin briefs PM Modi on Alaska summit with Trump, discusses Ukraine conflict and bilateral ties
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sharing details of his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. The conversation highlighted both the Ukraine conflict and the deepening India-Russia strategic partnership.
PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy as the only path to resolving the Ukraine war. “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
The leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to strengthen the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.” India had earlier welcomed the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin, describing their initiative for peace as “highly commendable.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said progress at the summit reaffirmed dialogue as the only viable way forward.
Putin and Trump held three hours of talks at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre, joined by top officials including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both leaders signaled progress but stopped short of announcing a ceasefire. Trump later remarked that any deal would require Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s agreement.
This was the second call between Putin and Modi this month. On August 8, Putin had briefed Modi on prior discussions with US officials, with both leaders agreeing on the need for diplomacy. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to Moscow on August 21 for talks with Lavrov at the 26th Intergovernmental Commission, focusing on trade, economy, and international cooperation.
