Russia condemns U.S. for excessive military force in Caribbean counter-narcotics operations

Russia has issued a strong condemnation of the United States over what it calls the “excessive use of military force” during counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean. In a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized Washington’s actions as violations of both U.S. domestic and international law.

“We firmly denounce the use of excessive military force in anti-drug operations,” Zakharova stated, asserting that several international figures — including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk — have expressed similar concerns.

Zakharova reaffirmed Russia’s “firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in its efforts to defend national sovereignty,” and called for maintaining Latin America and the Caribbean as a “zone of peace.” She urged de-escalation and constructive dialogue to resolve disputes in accordance with international law.

The U.S. has recently intensified its anti-narcotics campaign across the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, targeting at least 14 vessels and resulting in 61 reported fatalities. The campaign, according to Washington, is aimed at disrupting illegal drug trafficking networks.

Reports indicate that the United States has also expanded its military footprint in the region, deploying warships, fighter jets, and thousands of troops. Russia views these moves as destabilizing and inconsistent with international norms.

The statement follows the May 2025 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Moscow, where both leaders signed a strategic partnership agreement to strengthen political and defense cooperation.

Moscow’s latest remarks underscore rising geopolitical tensions as global powers compete for influence in Latin America.
