US Ambassador Sergio Gor meets Jaishankar in New Delhi, discusses India–US strategic ties

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday in New Delhi, emphasizing the growing significance of India–US bilateral relations and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Gor, who began his four-day visit to India on October 9, was accompanied by US Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas. The two officials are holding consultations with Indian counterparts on strategic, economic, and defense cooperation.

After the meeting, Jaishankar posted on X, “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility.”

The US Embassy in New Delhi clarified that Gor’s visit was not related to his formal assumption of office. “This is a short trip. His presentation of credentials will occur at a later date, which has not yet been determined,” a spokesperson said.

Before his arrival, Gor met Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra during Diwali celebrations at India House in Washington. “Pleasure to host Ambassador and Special Envoy to the President Sergio Gor yesterday at India House for Diwali celebrations before his visit to India,” Kwatra posted on X.

Confirmed by the US Senate on October 7, the 38-year-old Gor is the youngest US ambassador to India and a close aide to former President Donald Trump. Previously, he served as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. Gor will also act as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

His visit comes at a time when India–US relations are navigating challenges over H1B visa reforms and trade tariffs, even as both sides reaffirm their commitment to a stronger strategic partnership.
