Singapore PM Lawrence Wong pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat during India visit

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, on a three-day official visit to India, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a wreath at Raj Ghat on Wednesday. The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations, underlining the strong historical and strategic bond between the two nations.

Sharing images from the solemn ceremony, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X: “PM Lawrence Wong of Singapore paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a wreath at Raj Ghat. Bapu’s universal ideals of truth and non-violence continue to inspire us.”

On Tuesday, Wong met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss outcomes of the 3rd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable. Their talks focused on enhancing cooperation in cross-border data flows, capital markets, and financial connectivity. Wong emphasized that Singapore and India hold “great potential to further bolster financial and digital linkages.”

This marks Wong’s first visit to India since assuming office. He is accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials. Upon arrival in New Delhi, he expressed optimism about strengthening ties, calling the visit “especially meaningful” as the two nations celebrate six decades of diplomatic partnership.

On Thursday, Wong is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior leaders will also engage with him.

The visit is expected to see the signing of agreements in finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that Singapore remains a key partner in India’s Act East Policy and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
