Trump unveils 20-point peace plan to end Gaza war

US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a 20-point peace initiative to end the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, unveiling the plan during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The proposal, presented as the “most comprehensive path to peace” since the outbreak of war in October 2023, calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages within 72 hours if Hamas agrees. In return, Israel pledged not to annex Gaza or forcibly displace its residents.

Under the plan, a temporary technocratic government would be established in Gaza, overseen by an international “Board of Peace” chaired by Trump, alongside leaders such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. This body would manage redevelopment and security until the Palestinian Authority enacts reforms to reassume governance.

Hamas members willing to renounce violence would be granted amnesty, while others would be offered safe passage abroad. Regional and international forces would oversee Gaza’s security and help train local police. International aid would be coordinated at agreed levels, with Washington facilitating further Israeli-Palestinian dialogue.

Netanyahu endorsed the plan, saying it aligns with Israel’s war aims but warned Hamas: “It can be done the easy way or the hard way.” Trump echoed that sentiment, promising US support for Israel should Hamas reject the proposal.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking 251 hostages. Nearly two years on, around 48 hostages remain, while Gaza has suffered over 66,000 deaths and widespread destruction.

Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour signaled openness to the initiative, expressing readiness to cooperate with the US, Saudi Arabia, European partners, and the UN in seeking a lasting settlement.
