Donald Trump tells Tim Cook to stop Apple manufacturing in India

During his state visit to Qatar, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to stop manufacturing in India and focus instead on production within the United States. The remarks come at a sensitive time, as tensions simmer between Washington and New Delhi over Trump’s controversial claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said, referring to their meeting. “He is building all over India. I don’t want you building in India. India can take care of itself.”

Trump’s comments follow his earlier praise of Apple’s decision to expand its manufacturing base within the U.S. after U.S.-China tariff discussions in Geneva. Notably, India had reportedly offered a “no-tariff deal” to the U.S., aiming to encourage bilateral trade and investment. However, Trump’s firm stance signals a shift in priorities toward domestic manufacturing and economic nationalism.

The statement is likely to impact Apple’s ongoing expansion in India, where the company has been ramping up iPhone production and supplier networks. It also adds a new layer of complexity to U.S.-India trade relations already under strain from strategic and diplomatic differences.
