Trump writes to ex-Indian envoy Sandhu, shares condolences over brother’s death

US President Donald Trump has extended his condolences to former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, following the death of Sandhu’s brother, Jasjit Singh Samundri. The condolence letter, dated October 17, praised Samundri’s public service and deep devotion to family.

In the letter, Trump wrote: “Dear Ambassador Sandhu, I was saddened to learn of the loss of your beloved brother, Jasjit Singh Samundri. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family. Like you, your brother was a respected Indian public servant. He will be remembered for his public service, deep faith, and immense love of family.”

Trump also recalled Sandhu’s instrumental role during his February 2020 state visit to India. “As I write, I warmly recall receiving you in the Oval Office on February 6, 2020, and your tireless efforts to ensure the success of my state visit to India. I pray that the memories you and your brother shared provide enduring comfort and peace. May God bless you and your family,” the letter added.

Ambassador Sandhu, a veteran diplomat of nearly four decades, served as India’s envoy to the US from 2020 to 2024. He shared the letter on X, expressing gratitude: “Thank you, President Trump @POTUS, for your condolences. My family and I are deeply honoured and touched by your kind and thoughtful gesture.”

Samundri, a former senior civil servant, passed away on September 30 after a prolonged illness. Scholars and observers, including Christopher Clary, Associate Professor at the University at Albany, lauded the gesture as a thoughtful diplomatic move.

The letter coincided with Trump’s White House Diwali celebration, where he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lit a diya symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, and extended warm wishes to the Indian community in the US. The event also underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen Indo-US ties, particularly in trade and economic collaboration.
