Trump sets 10-day deadline for Russia to end Ukraine war, warns of tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a new 10-day ultimatum to Russia to end its war in Ukraine, sharply reducing the original 50-day timeline he announced earlier this month. Trump warned that failure to comply would result in harsh economic measures, including tariffs.

“Russia has 10 days from today to reach a ceasefire agreement,” Trump told reporters during his return flight to Washington from Scotland. “Otherwise, we’re going to put on tariffs and stuff,” he added, without elaborating on the specifics of the sanctions.

Trump had initially given Moscow 50 days to agree to a ceasefire during a July 14 statement, warning of “severe tariffs.” However, during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, he expressed frustration with what he called Moscow’s unwillingness to compromise and shortened the deadline to “10 or 12 days.”

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow has “taken note” of Trump’s remarks but stated that Russia’s military operations in Ukraine will continue. “We remain committed to the peace process,” he added, emphasizing that Russia will protect its national interests during any settlement.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to escalate. Russian drone and missile attacks targeted Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region on Sunday, wounding four civilians. Russian authorities also claimed to have intercepted 150 Ukrainian drones, with one fatality and three injuries reported near St. Petersburg.

Trump’s renewed pressure adds a new diplomatic twist as Western efforts to mediate peace in Ukraine have largely stalled. It remains unclear whether his warning will alter Russia’s position or accelerate negotiations.
