Trump deploys top diplomatic force to shore up Gaza peace deal

US President Donald Trump has mobilized his top diplomatic team to reinforce the fragile Gaza peace deal, considered one of his most significant achievements to date. Senior negotiators, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, have been stationed in Israel, while Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, undertook a three-day visit, meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials.

On their return, they were joined by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to continue high-level diplomacy. The UN’s Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov, warned the Security Council that while the agreement offers hope, “the dynamics are extremely fragile.”

Vice President Vance condemned a recent Israeli Knesset resolution aiming to annex the West Bank, calling it a “stupid political stunt” that threatens the peace deal. Despite minor ceasefire violations by rogue Hamas units, the agreement largely holds, with hostage and prisoner exchanges nearing completion.

The next challenge is disarming Hamas. Vance ruled out deploying US combat troops but indicated that around 200 US forces in Israel could supervise and mediate the peace. Indonesia and other countries have pledged support for an International Stabilisation Force, potentially under a UN mandate for legitimacy.

Plans are also underway to rebuild Gaza, where estimates indicate 80% of homes were destroyed during the conflict. Vance expressed hope that Rafah could be reconstructed over the next two to three years, potentially housing up to 500,000 residents.

US diplomats emphasized that while the peace deal marks historic progress, it requires continued vigilance and international collaboration. The combination of diplomatic engagement, careful monitoring, and phased reconstruction aims to stabilize Gaza and solidify a lasting truce between Israel and Hamas.
