US negotiator says Trump will prioritize India in trade deal

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has urged India to trust President Donald Trump, assuring that the US will prioritize India’s interests in future trade agreements.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) annual summit, Lutnick—one of Trump’s closest trade advisers—said, “Trump thinks of America first, but not America only. He deeply admires India and will ensure we have a great relationship.”

Lutnick acknowledged trade differences, particularly over tariffs, and called India “very protectionist.” However, he expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial trade deal soon, emphasizing the need for “reasonable market access” on both sides.

A deal, he suggested, is “not too distant,” provided both sides appoint serious negotiators ready for outcomes rather than delays.
