Trump says he ‘gets along with tough ones,’ highlights mediator role in global conflicts
US President Donald Trump on Monday asserted his confidence as an international mediator, saying he has “never failed at working immediately” when called upon to defuse global crises. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after the Middle East Peace Summit in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, Trump said, “I get along with the tough ones; I don’t get along with the weak ones.”
Citing examples, Trump noted his strong rapport with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “When NATO has a problem with Erdogan, they call me to talk to him. And it always works out,” he said.
Discussing the recently concluded Gaza Peace Summit, Trump said the US-led effort “did it the right way,” focusing on reconstruction rather than political divisions. “We are talking about rebuilding Gaza, not about one state or two states. Our timing was perfect,” he added.
The summit, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and President Trump, brought together leaders from over 20 nations and international organizations. The Gaza ceasefire document was signed by key mediators including Egypt, the US, Turkey, and Qatar — though representatives from Israel and Hamas were notably absent.
During the summit, Trump also praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “a very good friend” who has “done a fantastic job.” His remarks came just days after Modi congratulated him on the “historic Gaza peace plan.”
Sisi, opening the summit, called it “a pivotal moment in history” as leaders gathered to formalize the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement to end the Gaza conflict.
