US President Donald Trump used his State of the Union address not only to outline his administration’s agenda but also to spotlight a range of Americans whose personal stories he said embodied the nation’s resilience, sacrifice and determination.

Among those honoured was Navy fighter pilot Royce Williams, a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Trump recounted how, in 1952, Williams’ squadron was ambushed by seven Soviet fighter jets. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Williams helped shoot down four enemy aircraft while sustaining 263 bullet strikes to his own plane. Calling him a symbol of courage, Trump said the 100-year-old veteran was finally receiving long-overdue national recognition and announced he would be presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The President also recognised Buddy Taggart, who volunteered for military service at age 17 during World War II. Taggart fought in the Pacific theatre under General Douglas MacArthur and participated in the liberation of an internment camp in the Philippines. Trump noted that Taggart would turn 100 on July 4, 2026, and saluted his lifelong service.

In another tribute, Trump awarded the Legion of Merit to Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan, praising him for saving 165 people during catastrophic floods in Texas on his first rescue mission. The President described Ruskan’s actions as a testament to selfless service and dedication.

The address also paid tribute to Specialist Sarah Beckstrom of the Army National Guard, who was killed while on patrol near the White House. Trump described her as having sacrificed her life defending the nation’s capital and acknowledged her parents in attendance.

Beyond the military, Trump highlighted civilians whose experiences were linked to his policy initiatives. Catherine Rayner was introduced as a beneficiary of his prescription drug pricing reforms, having reportedly received IVF medication at a significantly reduced cost. Megan Hemhouser, a mother balancing homeschooling with night shifts as a waitress, was cited as someone who would benefit from proposals to eliminate taxes on tips and overtime pay.

Trump also welcomed Alejandra Gonzalez, whose uncle Enrique had been detained in Venezuela after opposing President Nicolás Maduro. Trump said Enrique had since been released and was present at the address.

By weaving these individual accounts into his speech, the President underscored a long-standing tradition of using invited guests to humanise policy priorities and frame legislative goals through personal narratives.
