Trump announces uniform US tariff plan for over 150 countries

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping plan to impose a unified tariff rate on more than 150 countries and regions, marking a major escalation in his administration’s trade policy, according to a Politico report cited by Xinhua.

Speaking at the White House during a meeting with Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa on Wednesday, Trump said, “It’s all going to be the same for everyone, for that group.” He described the targeted economies as “not big” and those that “don’t do that much business.”

This follows the April rollout of a 10% baseline tariff on countries not covered by bilateral agreements. While Trump previously hinted that the baseline could rise to 15% or 20%, he did not announce any updated rate on Wednesday.

According to reports, the U.S. has already sent tariff notices to about two dozen economies, including the European Union, Japan, and South Korea, with the new rates set to take effect on August 1. The move has triggered intensified trade talks, as impacted nations seek better terms.

India and Switzerland, both of which accounted for more than 3% of the U.S. trade deficit in 2024, are still in negotiations with Washington and have not yet received formal notifications.

Trump made conflicting statements about U.S.-India trade relations, saying, “We have another (deal) coming up,” but later noted, “We’re very close to a deal.” He also commented on Japan, saying talks are ongoing but hinted that no new agreement may be reached soon.

Analysts have raised concerns over the timing and implementation of the new tariffs, warning of negative repercussions for the U.S. economy and domestic political stability.
