UN welcomes diplomatic efforts after Trump-Putin phone call on Ukraine war

The United Nations has welcomed diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine-Russia conflict, calling the recent phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin a “positive development.”

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stated on Wednesday that the UN appreciates any initiative that involves both Russian and Ukrainian leadership in peace negotiations.

“What we would appreciate is any effort to resolve the war in Ukraine that involves both the Russian and Ukrainian sides. If both are willing to engage in a process, it would be a welcome development,” Haq said at a daily press briefing.

Highlighting the global significance of US-Russia relations, Haq added, “Given the importance of the United States and the Russian Federation, the UN welcomes any efforts to resolve issues through regular dialogue.”

On Wednesday, the White House and the Kremlin separately confirmed that Trump and Putin had held a phone conversation, according to Xinhua news agency.

Following his first official call with Putin since assuming office, Trump posted on Truth Social, “We both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the war with Russia/Ukraine.”

Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, later announcing that a high-level meeting is scheduled for Friday in Munich. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the US delegation at the Munich Security Conference, where global leaders in defense, security, and foreign affairs will convene.

Trump emphasized that Zelensky, “like President Putin, wants to make PEACE. We discussed a variety of topics related to the war.”

When asked whether the UN would play a role in the negotiations, Haq responded, “We would have to see what role we might play. As we have stated repeatedly over the last three years, the United Nations is willing to offer its good offices if requested by the parties.”
