US envoy says Washington will seek ‘alternative options’ for Gaza ceasefire

The United States is considering “alternative options” to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, following what it described as an unconstructive response from Hamas to the latest mediated proposal.

US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, announced that the American negotiating team is returning from Doha to Washington for consultations. In a post on X, Witkoff called Hamas’ latest response “selfish” and indicative of a lack of genuine interest in halting the conflict.

“We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas,” Witkoff said. “We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.”

At a State Department briefing, Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott declined to elaborate on what those “alternative options” might entail.

The development came hours after Israel also recalled its negotiating team from Qatar, citing the need for further consultations. The move followed Hamas’ reply to a proposed 60-day ceasefire and a phased prisoner exchange, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and backed by the United States.

According to Israeli media, Hamas is demanding the release of 200 Palestinian militants and 2,000 civilians detained in Gaza since October 7, 2023 — far above Israel’s reported offer of 120 militants and 1,200 civilians.

Israeli sources maintain the talks have not collapsed and that momentum remains, though crucial decisions lie ahead.

The US has reiterated its commitment to securing the return of Israeli hostages and achieving long-term stability in Gaza, even as diplomatic efforts face increasing strain.
