US and Israel launch major strikes on Iran as Trump urges regime change

The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes on Iran on Saturday, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions and opening a new phase of direct confrontation. President Donald Trump described the operation as “major combat operations,” urging the Iranian public to “seize control of your destiny” and rise up against the country’s Islamic leadership.

Initial strikes reportedly targeted areas near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Iranian state media confirmed explosions in the capital and other cities, with smoke seen rising across parts of Tehran. Roads leading to key government compounds were reportedly sealed off as additional blasts were heard.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the joint operation aimed to create conditions for the Iranian people to “take their fate into their own hands,” echoing Trump’s call for political change in Tehran. The strikes represent the second instance in eight months of direct U.S. military action against Iran under the Trump administration.

Washington has justified the action by citing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and regional military activities. Trump accused Tehran of continuing to pursue nuclear capabilities and expanding missile development, claims Iranian officials have denied. Iran maintains it has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and has rejected broader negotiations over its missile program and regional alliances.

In response, Iran launched waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel. Strikes were also reported near U.S. military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Airspace was temporarily closed in several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Iraq, as regional governments heightened security measures. The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement declaring it would “not hesitate” in defending the country.

Casualties have been reported. Iranian state media said an airstrike in the southern city of Minab killed five students at a girls’ school. Regional tensions have sharply intensified, with U.S. embassies in parts of the Gulf advising citizens to shelter in place.

The unfolding conflict comes amid heightened geopolitical strain across the Middle East, with global markets and diplomatic channels closely watching developments. Analysts warn that further escalation could destabilize the broader region, particularly if retaliatory cycles continue.
