US Senator backs Trump-led unity in Ukraine peace talks

A senior US senator has welcomed reports that the United States, Ukraine, and European allies have aligned around a shared negotiating position aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, saying Western unity has significantly weakened Russia’s strategic position.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker said the growing consensus among Western partners sends a powerful signal to Moscow. “I welcome reports that the United States, Ukraine, and Europe have coalesced around a common negotiating position to end Putin’s war of aggression,” the Mississippi Republican said in a statement.

Wicker argued that unity among Western nations undermines Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to fracture the alliance supporting Kyiv. “The West’s demonstration of unity sends a clear signal to Putin. His plan to divide us will fail,” he said.

The senator credited US President Donald Trump with fostering that alignment, saying it has allowed the West to negotiate from a position of strength. “President Trump has succeeded in building unity that enables the West to engage Putin with confidence and resolve,” Wicker said.

Rejecting Moscow’s portrayal of the conflict, Wicker accused Putin of advancing what he called a false narrative about the war’s trajectory. He pointed to recent developments on the battlefield, noting that Ukrainian forces have retaken the strategic city of Kupiansk while Russian troops have failed to capture Pokrovsk. These outcomes, he said, contradict claims that Russia is steadily achieving its military objectives.

“Putin cannot generate the combat power required to accomplish his maximalist political goals,” Wicker said, adding that Ukraine continues to outperform Russia through innovation and adaptability on the battlefield.

Wicker also said European allies, encouraged by Trump, are increasing their defense commitments. He noted that European nations are taking concrete steps to rebuild their industrial bases in coordination with the United States, strengthening long-term security cooperation.

The senator accused Russia of spreading unsubstantiated claims to derail diplomatic efforts, dismissing allegations of Ukrainian attacks near Putin’s residence in Novograd as an excuse to reject proposed peace terms backed by the Trump administration.

Wicker said Ukraine has demonstrated willingness to pursue peace on fair and realistic terms, noting that President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly signaled readiness to make concessions. However, he warned against any settlement that would force Kyiv to surrender unoccupied territory, arguing such an outcome would reward aggression.

Calling for sustained military assistance, Wicker urged increased support for Ukraine, particularly air defense systems and long-range strike capabilities. He emphasized that credible security guarantees are essential for a lasting ceasefire and welcomed Trump’s proposal to submit such guarantees to the US Senate, calling it a step toward bipartisan backing.

“It is time to end this war,” Wicker said, “but peace must not come at the expense of justice or reward the aggressor.”
