US not giving up on Ukraine peace efforts, says Marco Rubio

US Secretary of State and acting National Security Advisor Marco Rubio has reaffirmed America’s commitment to resolving the conflict in Ukraine but acknowledged growing pressure to prioritize other pressing global challenges.

“We’re not going to give up on it,” Rubio said in an interview with Fox News. “But there comes a point when President Trump has to decide how much more time at the highest levels of our government we dedicate to it.”

Rubio emphasized that while the Ukraine war remains significant, other international concerns—particularly China’s geopolitical maneuvers and Iran’s nuclear ambitions—may pose greater long-term challenges.

“What’s happening with China is more important in the long term,” Rubio stated, adding that resolving the Ukraine crisis will require a breakthrough in negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, who, he said, remain “closer, but still far apart.”

His comments follow a call earlier this week between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Rubio, where the two discussed conditions for resuming peace talks. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the conversation aimed to “consolidate the emerging prerequisites for launching talks” toward a sustainable peace agreement in Ukraine.

The diplomatic momentum follows an April 25 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, which reportedly lasted three hours and was described by Russian officials as “constructive and quite useful.”

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov also reiterated that President Putin remains open to negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions.

As global dynamics shift, the US appears to be weighing how to balance its commitment to ending the war in Ukraine with broader strategic concerns in other regions.
