White House confirms direct talks with Hamas aimed at releasing hostages

The White House has confirmed that the Trump administration is engaged in direct talks with Hamas to negotiate the release of hostages held in Gaza.

According to Axios, the discussions have taken place in Doha, Qatar, in recent weeks, with US Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Adam Boehler, leading the negotiations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged the direct engagement when asked about the matter during Wednesday’s press briefing.

“The special envoy who’s engaged in those negotiations does have the authority to talk to anyone,” Leavitt said, adding that Israel had been consulted before the talks began.

US shifts stance on Hamas negotiations

This confirmation marks a significant shift in US policy, as Washington has historically refused direct contact with Hamas, which it has designated a terrorist organization since 1997.

A US official cited in the Axios report stated that the talks aim not only to secure hostage releases but also to explore a broader agreement, potentially leading to a long-term truce.

Hostage crisis and ceasefire talks

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) estimates that 59 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with at least 35 confirmed dead. Among them are five American citizens, including one believed to be alive.

The negotiations come amid efforts to extend the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, which initially saw 33 hostages exchanged for over 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

As ceasefire discussions continue, Israel has suspended humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, increasing pressure on Hamas to agree to new terms. However, France, the UK, and Germany have condemned Israel’s move, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law.

The situation remains tense as negotiations unfold, with global leaders urging both sides to find a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
