Veer Bal Diwas Honoring courage and sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh’s sons

Veer Bal Diwas is observed every year on December 26 to honor the extraordinary bravery and martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, the sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. The day specifically commemorates the younger sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, who chose death rather than renounce their faith when captured by Mughal authorities during the early 18th century. Their courage and unwavering commitment to Sikh principles continue to inspire millions of people around the world.

The Indian government officially declared December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas in 2022, underscoring the day’s importance as a tribute to youth courage and moral strength. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the observance pays homage to the Sahibzadas’ unshakable faith and commitment to righteousness, ensuring their story is remembered by future generations.

This year, communities across India marked Veer Bal Diwas with prayer services, educational programs, exhibitions on Sikh history, and gatherings at local gurdwaras. In cities such as Ludhiana, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria urged youth to emulate the bravery, devotion, and selflessness of the four Sahibzadas and highlighted their example in nation-building and moral courage.

International Sikh communities in North America, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Europe held special kirtan programs, prayer meetings, and storytelling sessions focused on the Sahibzadas’ sacrifice. These events aimed to educate younger generations about the historical significance of their martyrdom and to reinforce values of faith, courage, and moral integrity.

Veer Bal Diwas is not only a reminder of a profound historical moment but also a day to reaffirm principles of truth, bravery, and resilience that continue to resonate across cultures and generations.
