Canada acknowledges Khalistani extremism for first time: Amit Malviya

BJP leader Amit Malviya has described Canada’s official recognition of Khalistani extremism as a key diplomatic achievement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit. Malviya emphasized that this is the first time the Canadian government has formally acknowledged that Khalistani extremists are using Canadian soil to promote violence in India.

In a post on social media, Malviya highlighted a Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) report that identifies Canada-based Khalistani extremists (CBKEs) as a political and security concern. “Canada’s top intelligence agency now confirms what India has long maintained,” said Malviya, noting that the report specifically uses the term “extremism” in relation to Khalistanis—an unprecedented move by Ottawa.

The report, cited by Malviya, states: “Khalistani extremists continue to use Canada as a base for the promotion, fundraising or planning of violence primarily in India.” It further defines politically motivated violent extremism (PMVE) as efforts to use violence to create new political systems or norms, including the goal of an independent Khalistan.

Malviya called the statement a diplomatic milestone, especially following years of inaction by the previous Trudeau-led government. He linked this development to PM Modi’s recent discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.

India has long expressed concern over Khalistani activities in Canada. This acknowledgment signals a potential shift in bilateral cooperation on security and counter-terrorism.
