Modi, Cyprus President boost India-Cyprus business ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides participated in a high-level business roundtable in Limassol on Sunday, aiming to boost economic and strategic ties between the two nations. The event saw the participation of top CEOs from both countries and focused on sectors like energy, technology, innovation, shipping, and fintech.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Boosting business linkages! President Christodoulides and I interacted with leading CEOs in order to add vigour to commercial linkages between India and Cyprus. Sectors like innovation, energy, technology and more offer immense potential.”
President Christodoulides also highlighted the significance of the event, calling it the start of a “new era of strategic partnership, founded on trust and shared values.”
India’s External Affairs Ministry noted that both leaders emphasized enhancing trade, investment, and innovation ties, and called for closer cooperation in artificial intelligence, logistics, defence, and connectivity.
This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. Modi’s arrival was met with ceremonial honours at Larnaca International Airport and an enthusiastic welcome from the Indian diaspora.
The visit comes as Cyprus prepares to assume the EU Council presidency in 2026. PM Modi’s presence underscores India’s intent to deepen engagement with the European Union and the Mediterranean region.
Cyprus has long supported India on global platforms, including the UN, and continues to back New Delhi on key strategic concerns. Recent moves like the opening of a Eurobank office in Mumbai signal growing financial cooperation.
The roundtable capped a day of diplomatic outreach aimed at reinvigorating Indo-Cypriot ties ahead of Modi’s next stop at the G7 Summit in Canada.
