Vishwa Mitra: India’s readiness in times of crisis a hallmark of identity, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised India’s humanitarian efforts around the world, emphasizing that the nation’s swift response to crises reflects its growing identity as a “Vishwa Mitra” (Friend of the World).
During the 121st episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi recalled ‘Operation Brahma’, a major relief mission launched to assist Myanmar after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
“You must have seen the devastating images from Myanmar. Every moment was critical for those trapped. India immediately launched Operation Brahma. Air Force aircraft, Navy ships, and medical teams were deployed, along with essential supplies like blankets, tents, medicines, and food,” Modi said.
He shared a moving story about rescuing a 70-year-old woman trapped for more than 18 hours under debris. “Thanks to the Indian team’s courage and quick treatment, she survived. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to our team,” he added.
PM Modi also highlighted rescue efforts at a monastery in Mandalay, where many were saved, and how the monks blessed the Indian teams for their service.
“Our spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ — the world is one family — drives these efforts. India’s readiness in times of crisis and commitment to humanity is becoming the hallmark of our identity,” he said.
The Prime Minister further cited humanitarian efforts by Indians abroad, mentioning an initiative by NRIs in Ethiopia. There, Indian families are sponsoring heart surgeries for Ethiopian children and even covering travel costs for needy families.
In addition, India recently sent a large consignment of vaccines to Afghanistan and medicines to Nepal to aid in treating serious diseases like thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.
“Whenever there is a call for humanitarian service, India stands at the forefront,” PM Modi asserted.
He also introduced the NDMA’s ‘Sachet App’, designed to keep citizens alert during natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and earthquakes. “The app provides real-time updates in regional languages. It could help save lives,” he encouraged listeners.
In closing, PM Modi called on citizens to stay alert, support humanitarian causes, and share the spirit of service that defines India today.
