EAM Jaishankar meets UN chief Guterres, expresses gratitude for support to India’s development
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, where he conveyed India’s appreciation for the UN chief’s consistent support for the country’s growth and global aspirations. The meeting underscored India’s continued engagement with multilateral institutions at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and regional instability.
Jaishankar shared details of the discussion on X, noting that he valued Guterres’ assessment of the current global order and its implications for multilateralism. He added that the two also exchanged views on several regional hotspots, reflecting India’s active diplomatic role in conflict resolution and global governance. The External Affairs Minister expressed hope of welcoming Guterres to India in the near future, signaling New Delhi’s intent to deepen its cooperation with the UN.
The meeting came days after Guterres extended condolences to India following the deadly explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening. The blast, caused by a Haryana-registered car parked near Gate No. 1, resulted in multiple fatalities and left more than 20 people injured. The UN spokesperson’s office conveyed the Secretary-General’s sympathies and called for a full investigation into the incident.
Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, responding to questions at the daily UN briefing, referred to the incident as “what happened there” and emphasized that it must be thoroughly investigated. His remarks echoed the UN’s longstanding position on condemning acts of violence and urging accountability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the explosion as part of a larger conspiracy and vowed that authorities would identify and punish all those involved. “Our agencies will get to the bottom of this conspiracy. All those responsible will be brought to justice,” he stated.
The Union Cabinet officially designated the incident a terrorist attack and adopted a resolution characterizing it as a “heinous terror incident perpetrated by anti-national forces.” The resolution directed investigative agencies to act with “utmost urgency and professionalism” to identify the perpetrators, collaborators, and sponsors behind the attack.
Jaishankar’s meeting with Guterres, set against this backdrop, highlighted India’s emphasis on global cooperation and its expectation of strong international support in combating terrorism. The discussion reinforced the strategic alignment between India and the UN on key global issues, including peace, development, and multilateral reform.
