Foreign Secretary Misri, Deputy NSA Kapoor to visit US next week

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Deputy National Security Advisor Pawan Kapoor are set to visit Washington next week at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to top sources.

The high-level visit follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that his administration helped broker the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, India has maintained that the agreement came after Pakistan sought to end hostilities during Operation Sindoor, which saw Indian forces targeting Pakistani air bases.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently reiterated that while many countries, including the U.S., reached out during the crisis from May 7–10, the ceasefire was directly negotiated between India and Pakistan after Islamabad made the first move.

Jaishankar told Dutch broadcaster NOS that it’s natural for nations to engage diplomatically during conflicts. He confirmed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance had spoken to him and Prime Minister Modi, respectively.

Trump also claimed that India has proposed a bilateral trade deal with zero tariffs on a range of American goods. Talks on a broader trade agreement are underway, following PM Modi’s visit to Washington in February.

Meanwhile, a separate all-party delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor began its tour of the Americas and Caribbean, promoting India’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism. The group will visit Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and Brazil before heading to the U.S. for high-level meetings.
