Modi thanks diaspora in Cyprus, vows stronger ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his arrival in Cyprus on Sunday, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian diaspora for their warm welcome and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening ties with the Mediterranean nation.
PM Modi arrived in Limassol as part of his three-nation tour and was greeted with flowers and cheers by members of the Indian community. He interacted with the diaspora at his hotel, acknowledging their support and highlighting their role as cultural ambassadors.
“This visit will add significant momentum to India-Cyprus relations, especially in areas like trade, investment and more,” PM Modi posted on X after receiving a ceremonial welcome at Larnaca International Airport by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Finance Minister Constantinos Kombos.
Modi is accompanied by a high-level delegation of around 100 officials. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus and is being seen as a historic moment by both sides.
During his visit, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with President Christodoulides, focusing on key areas such as trade, innovation, defence, renewable energy, shipping, and maritime security. The leaders are also expected to discuss regional issues, including developments in West Asia.
India and Cyprus have enjoyed strong diplomatic ties since 1962. Cyprus has consistently supported India’s positions at international forums, including on Kashmir. The visit is expected to further reinforce these ties.
PM Modi also emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections, as the Indian community in Cyprus continues to contribute meaningfully in fields like education, healthcare, and business.
Following his Cyprus visit, PM Modi will travel to Canada for the G7 Summit, and later to Croatia for bilateral meetings.
