Priyamani and PETA India bring cruelty-free circus joy to Chennai children
Over 100 children from the Sivananda Saraswathi Sevashram experienced the magic of an animal-free circus, thanks to a compassionate initiative by actor Priyamani and PETA India. Held in Guduvancheri, the show featured Gemini Circus’ modern, cruelty-free performance using lifelike animatronic animals.
Priyamani, who sponsored the event, partnered with PETA India to highlight ethical entertainment alternatives that don’t involve the exploitation of animals. Last year, Gemini Circus was honoured by PETA India for eliminating live animal acts in favour of humane and imaginative technology-driven performances.
“By supporting animal-free entertainment, we take a step towards a more humane world for all beings,” said Priyamani. “We invite everyone to celebrate this shift and support compassionate initiatives.”
For many of the children, this was their first-ever circus experience. A representative from the Sevashram said, “Our children were mesmerised by the magical performance. We’re deeply thankful to Priyamani and PETA India for giving them a joyous and educational day to remember.”
Ujjwal Agrain, Senior Policy Advisor at PETA India, praised Priyamani for her advocacy and support. “Her involvement helped highlight the joyful alternatives to animal-based entertainment. We encourage everyone to choose circuses that don’t exploit animals.”
PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) have long documented cruelty in circuses, including physical abuse, chronic confinement, and deprivation. Both the AWBI and Central Zoo Authority have recommended a nationwide ban on animals in circuses.
PETA India has also petitioned the Delhi High Court to implement amendments to the Performing Animals Rules (2018), which would legally prohibit animals in circus performances.
Priyamani, a dedicated animal rights advocate, has previously promoted pet sterilisation and donated a mechanical elephant to a temple in Kochi to prevent the use of live elephants in rituals.
