Russian Submarine Ufa Docks at Kochi Port, Welcomed by Indian Navy
The Russian submarine ‘Ufa’ has arrived at Kochi port in Kerala, receiving a warm reception from the Indian Navy. The Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) shared details and images of the welcoming event.
This docking comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia, for the 16th BRICS Summit. The Russian Embassy previously announced the arrival of a detachment from the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet, which includes the diesel-electric submarine Ufa and the rescue tug Alatau, for a business visit.
This is not the first instance of Russian naval ships visiting Kochi. In August, Russian warships, including the missile cruiser Varyag and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, docked at Kochi during their long-distance mission. During their stay, the crews engaged in replenishing supplies, sightseeing, and conducting friendly naval drills with Indian counterparts.
Kochi, strategically located on Kerala’s southwestern coast along the Arabian Sea, has become a regular stop for Russian naval vessels. The visit of the Ufa is part of a broader long-term mission of the Pacific Fleet that began on January 22, 2024. Throughout this mission, the fleet’s crews have undertaken extensive combat training and daily operations at sea, visiting ports in India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Qatar, and Eritrea.
In July, the Indian Navy further strengthened its ties with Russia by participating in the Navy Day celebrations in St. Petersburg. The Indian frigate INS Tabar took part in the 328th Navy Day maritime parade, receiving a warm welcome from the Russian Navy.
These exchanges and visits highlight the deepening cooperation between the Indian and Russian navies, underscoring their longstanding partnership in defense and maritime security. As naval interactions continue, they serve as a testament to the enduring relationship between the two nations.
