Illinois State Capitol hosts Diwali celebration, marking Hindu Heritage Month

On November 12, 2024, the Illinois State Capitol was the backdrop for a vibrant Diwali celebration organized by the North American Cricket Council (NACC), IUSA Media, AASOA (Asian American Store Owners Association), and the US Indian Community Foundation (USICF), along with numerous supporting organizations. Over 100 members of the Indian American community gathered for the event, which highlighted the unity and cultural richness of the diaspora.

The celebration kicked off with a special proclamation from Governor J.B. Pritzker, declaring October as Hindu Heritage Month in Illinois. This recognition emphasizes the state’s commitment to honoring the contributions of Hindu Americans and fostering a diverse, inclusive environment. The evening also featured traditional Diwali prayers and reflections on the cultural significance of the Festival of Lights.
Illinois State Capitol hosts Diwali celebration, marking Hindu Heritage Month Distinguished guests, including Consul General Somnath Ghosh, Senators, U.S. Representatives, and local officials, celebrated the event’s success and the unifying power of Diwali. Speakers emphasized how cultural exchanges like Diwali help build stronger community bonds and promote mutual understanding.

A highlight of the event was the ceremonial lighting of lamps, a symbol of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The celebration not only showcased the rich traditions of the Indian American community but also reinforced the importance of diversity, unity, and interfaith harmony.

Nirav Patel of AASOA delivered the Vote of Thanks, and Subbu Iyer of NACC expressed gratitude to the officials, community leaders, and co-hosts for their contributions to making the event a success. The gathering served as a reminder of the timeless values of Diwali, emphasizing unity, gratitude, and shared humanity.
