Centre boosts PM E-Drive scheme with more EV charging stations
The Centre has intensified efforts under the PM E-Drive scheme, receiving inputs from 14 states to double the number of EV charging stations to 72,300 along highways and key urban centers. This initiative aims to accelerate green mobility and reduce pollution.
Government’s EV Expansion Plan
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched the scheme with a ₹10,900 crore budget, of which ₹2,000 crore is dedicated to setting up EV charging infrastructure. A senior official confirmed that the initiative targets supporting over 28.8 lakh electric vehicles by FY 2026.
To meet the growing demand, charging stations will be installed at ports, airports, and high-traffic highways, particularly benefiting e-buses.
The scheme includes:
✅ Grants for electric buses
✅ Expansion of EV charging networks
✅ Upgraded testing facilities for electric vehicles
Boosting EV Adoption in Cities
Within city limits, commercial electric vehicles, particularly e-3 wheelers, will receive priority. The government aims to have 2.05 lakh e-3 wheelers on roads by 2026 to encourage sustainable urban transportation.
Additionally, the government has set a target of 30% EV adoption for new private vehicle registrations by 2030, making a robust charging infrastructure crucial to alleviate range anxiety among buyers.
Existing & Upcoming EV Corridors
Charging stations are already operational on key highways, including:
- Delhi-Agra (Yamuna Expressway)
- Delhi-Jaipur (NH48)
- Chennai-Trichy (NH179B)
Further, the Ministry of Power has proposed 12 National Corridors for electrification, aligning with the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) pilot project, which is upgrading key roadways to EV-friendly corridors.
This expansion under the PM E-Drive scheme is expected to make EV adoption more accessible and widespread, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable transportation and climate goals.
