Finland President calls PM Modi to boost ties in digitalization, mobility

In a significant diplomatic outreach, Finnish President Alexander Stubb held a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to reaffirm the growing strategic partnership between Finland and India. The discussion focused on deepening collaboration in key areas such as quantum technology, 5G-6G, artificial intelligence (AI), and cyber-security.

Prime Minister Modi, sharing details of the call on social media platform X, said, “Had a fruitful conversation with President Alexander Stubb. Finland is an important partner country in the EU. We are committed to elevating our ties. Exchanged our perspectives on regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation in digitalization, sustainability, and mobility. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, with a particular focus on the Ukraine conflict.

President Stubb expressed Finland’s strong support for strengthening India-EU ties and emphasized the importance of concluding a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) at the earliest.

Stubb also posted about the conversation, stating, “Had a good phone conversation today with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. We discussed, among other things, bilateral relations, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and the geopolitical shifts and their implications for the multilateral system. In these turbulent times, the friendship between Finland and India is more important than ever.”

This discussion comes a day after PM Modi also spoke with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The leaders highlighted their countries’ strong cooperation under the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership and reiterated their shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Modi noted the positive momentum created since the Green Strategic Partnership was launched in 2020, pointing to increased Danish investments in India’s green economy. He also said he looks forward to the upcoming 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Norway, where he will meet Frederiksen.
