Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to visit India next week
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will undertake an official visit to India from October 9 to 16, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday. The visit comes after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) granted an exemption allowing Muttaqi to travel to India.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal briefed the media in New Delhi, stating, “The exemption has been granted by the UN Security Council Committee for the travel of Afghan Foreign Minister to New Delhi. This information is publicly available. We shall provide updates as the visit progresses.”
During his visit, Muttaqi is expected to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Earlier, his trip had been postponed due to delays in obtaining a UNSC travel exemption.
The visit forms part of ongoing diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and the Taliban regime, following multiple interactions in recent months. In January, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held talks with Muttaqi. Several senior Afghan officials have also visited India recently, including Deputy Minister of Medicine and Food Hamdullah Zahid, who attended the 11th International Exhibition on Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare last month.
According to Jaiswal, another senior Taliban official involved in security and strategic affairs visited New Delhi last month. The MEA emphasized ongoing collaboration with Afghanistan’s interim government, citing recent teleconferences between officials and timely delivery of relief material to earthquake-affected areas in Kunar province, including shipments through Chabahar port.
The visit is expected to further diplomatic discussions, strengthen humanitarian cooperation, and reinforce India’s engagement with Afghanistan on strategic, economic, and development-related matters.
