Australia men’s head coach Andrew McDonald extends contract until 2027
Australia men’s cricket head coach Andrew McDonald has been awarded a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the national side until the end of 2027.
McDonald has had a successful tenure as coach since taking over from Justin Langer in 2022, leading the team to its first ICC World Test Championship title in 2023 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in the same year. The extension allows McDonald the opportunity to defend both trophies.
The contract includes an away Test series in India and the next Ashes tour in 2027, as well as participation in the World Test Championship (2025-27). He will also lead the team in the next edition of the 50-over World Cup in 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during October and November.
Australia is currently ranked as the No. 1 Test team in the world and No. 2 in ODIs and T20Is. McDonald praised the dedication of the players and coaching staff for their contributions to the team’s recent successes.
“I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches, and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success, and development of this group,” McDonald said.
“The professionalism, commitment, and experience of my fellow coaches and the wider staff have ensured the journey has been extremely successful, but just as importantly, have created a culture of unity, trust, and inclusivity. International cricket presents many challenges for all teams, and I am particularly proud of how the group—players and staff—have navigated those together across all formats,” he added.
Australia is currently in a race to qualify for next year’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s, as they aim to defend their title. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will be crucial for their prospects.
Australia is currently second in the points table with 90 points, behind India, which has 98 points. However, India’s points percentage has dropped to 62.82 following their first home series loss in over a decade. In contrast, Australia’s points percentage stands at 62.50.
