Australian PM Celebrates Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas in Sydney
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the Sydney Murugan Temple on Friday, celebrating Diwali with the Hindu community alongside Parramatta MP Andrew Charlton.
“Deepavali celebrates the victory of light over darkness. It was fantastic to join the Tamil Australian community at the Sydney Murugan Temple today. This temple welcomes people from all walks of life and serves as a sanctuary for Western Sydney’s South Asian Hindu community,” Albanese shared on X.
Later, he also attended the Bandi Chhor Divas celebrations at Gurdwara Sahib in Glenwood, a suburb of Sydney. “It was wonderful to celebrate at Gurdwara Sahib Glenwood and to open the newly expanded kitchen that serves thousands every week,” he said, sharing photos of himself wearing a turban during the visit.
On Thursday, Albanese extended his Diwali wishes, describing the festival of lights as an “extraordinarily beautiful celebration of faith and culture” that resonates with Australians from diverse backgrounds.
“This annual festival of joy, hope, and togetherness is embraced by Australia’s vibrant society,” he stated in his greetings. “The celebration of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance affirms ideals that inspire Australians everywhere. The rituals and traditions of Diwali reflect community, culture, and heritage. It’s a time to enjoy the company of loved ones and reflect on our shared traditions.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that as families and friends gather in homes, parks, temples, and community centers across the nation, the glowing lights of this cherished festival bring peace and joy. “To everyone celebrating, I wish you a wonderful Diwali,” he concluded.
