25th Awami League leader dies in custody under Yunus-led regime

Another Awami League leader has died in prison custody, marking the 25th such death since Muhammad Yunus assumed power under the interim government in Bangladesh.

Saidur Rahman Sujan, Organising Secretary of the Dhaka North District Swechchhasebak League and former Chairman of the Birulia Union Parishad in Savar, was declared dead after being brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday. According to police at the DMCH outpost, Sujan had been transferred from the jail hospital where he was found unresponsive.

Authorities at the Central Jail in Keraniganj claim Sujan died by suicide. However, his family and Awami League officials dispute this version, alleging abuse in custody and calling for a full investigation into his death.

This is the second such case in just over a week. On June 7, another Awami League member, Ali Azgar, died in custody at the same jail, with his family accusing jail authorities of denying him medical care.

According to The Daily Republic, the interim Yunus-led regime has filed over 80,000 cases, arrested more than 360,000 individuals, and jailed at least 137,000 Awami League leaders and activists—many without trial—within just ten months.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, the Awami League condemned what it described as “systematic persecution” by the “illegal, fascist Yunus regime,” accusing it of targeting party members with violence, torture, and politically motivated charges.

The party called for an immediate judicial probe into the custodial deaths and held the current administration accountable for the ongoing deterioration of public safety and rule of law.
