5.3-magnitude earthquake strikes central Pakistan’s Punjab region
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck central Pakistan early Sunday, sending tremors across parts of Punjab province. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed the seismic event, which occurred around 3:54 am IST.
According to GFZ, the quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was centered approximately 149 kilometers west of Multan, a major city in Pakistan’s Punjab region. Shallow earthquakes tend to be felt more strongly at the surface, but no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage were issued by local authorities.
India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) also recorded the tremor, measuring it slightly lower at magnitude 5.2. The NCS reported the quake’s epicenter at latitude 30.25°N and longitude 69.82°E, but noted a deeper depth of 150 kilometers, which could have mitigated the quake’s surface impact.
The NCS shared the alert on social media, stating: “EQ of M: 5.2, On: 29/06/2025 03:54:02 IST, Lat: 30.25 N, Long: 69.82 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Pakistan.”
Pakistan lies along the active boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly susceptible to seismic activity. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are particularly prone to earthquakes.
While Sunday’s tremor caused no reported damage, officials continue to urge residents in earthquake-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols, especially in case of aftershocks.
Historically, Pakistan has faced deadly seismic events. In 2015, a 7.5-magnitude quake killed nearly 400 people across Pakistan and Afghanistan. In 2021, an earthquake in Balochistan claimed at least 20 lives.
