Egyptian, Lebanese FMs Discuss Regional Developments and De-Escalation Efforts

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib held a phone conversation to address the latest developments in Lebanon and efforts to de-escalate the situation in the region.

During the discussion, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s initiatives aimed at achieving an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of alleviating rising tensions to prevent a potential large-scale conflict, which could have severe implications for both regional and international peace and security.

The Egyptian diplomat condemned the Israeli military’s intentional targeting of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to providing support to Lebanon amidst the current crisis, noting that Egypt has dispatched 44 tonnes of aid to the country.

This dialogue comes in the context of increasing regional tensions following the Israeli military’s actions, including the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, ongoing Israeli assaults on Gaza and Lebanon, and threats against Iran, raising concerns about the possibility of a broader conflict.

Since September 23, the Israeli military has escalated its strikes on Lebanon amid heightened confrontations with Hezbollah, resulting in significant casualties and widespread displacement.
