Egyptian, US top diplomats discuss developments in Gaza, Syria

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held phone talks on Saturday night to discuss the ongoing situations in Gaza and Syria, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

During the conversation, Abdelatty stressed the importance of continuing regional and international efforts to secure an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza and ensure the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to the region. He also emphasized the need for Israel to halt its aggressive actions against the Palestinian people, particularly condemning Israel’s targeting of health infrastructure and hospitals in Gaza.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has intensified since October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel’s southern border, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis and nearly 250 taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a large-scale offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 45,000 Palestinians and left over 109,000 injured, according to Gaza’s health authorities. The UN Human Rights Office reported that a large portion of the casualties are women and children.

The US Department of State confirmed that Blinken discussed ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, with the aim of securing the release of hostages, increasing the flow of humanitarian aid, and bringing an end to the conflict.

Additionally, the two diplomats addressed Syria’s political transition following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Abdelatty called for a comprehensive political transition process free from external influence, aiming to secure Syria’s stability, unity, and territorial integrity. Blinken reiterated the US’s support for a peaceful political transition in Syria that is led and owned by Syrians, ensuring the creation of a representative and accountable government.

Both officials acknowledged Egypt’s continued role in striving for peace in the region, with Blinken expressing appreciation for the country’s efforts.
