Ex-US Prez Bill Clinton hospitalized, ‘awake and alert’, says staff
Former US President Bill Clinton, 78, was hospitalized at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., after developing a fever, according to a statement from his deputy chief of staff, Angel Urena.
Urena told CNN that Clinton is doing well, remains in good spirits, and is hopeful of returning home by Christmas. He is reportedly “awake and alert” as doctors conduct tests and monitor his condition.
Clinton was at his Washington residence when the decision was made to take him to the hospital. While he is expected to stay at least overnight, his medical team is optimistic about his recovery.
The 42nd US president, who served from January 1993 to January 2001, has faced several health challenges in the past. In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery, followed by a surgery for a partially collapsed lung in 2005. He had coronary stents placed in 2010 and was hospitalized for six days in 2021 for a severe blood infection.
Despite these health issues, Clinton has remained active in public life, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this past summer and traveling to promote his book, Citizen: My Life After the White House, during the fall.
Clinton’s spokesperson expressed gratitude for the excellent care he is receiving and the support from the public, with further updates on his condition expected as doctors continue their evaluations.
