World leaders gather in Canada for high-stakes G7 Summit

World leaders have assembled in the scenic Canadian Rockies for the G7 Summit, taking place amid rising global tensions, especially in the Middle East. The summit, hosted in Kananaskis, focuses on global economic stability and energy security.

During a 90-minute session, G7 leaders reviewed the global economic outlook, followed by a working lunch dedicated to energy issues. The summit’s streamlined agenda prioritizes coordination on global economic responses and geopolitical risks.

The Group of Seven (G7) includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, along with the European Union. This year’s summit also includes invited leaders from India, Ukraine, Australia, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, the UAE, and South Africa.

Among attendees are U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK PM Keir Starmer, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, and Australian PM Anthony Albanese.

President Macron reaffirmed France and the EU’s support for Greenland’s autonomy, rejecting previous U.S. remarks about acquiring the Arctic territory. “Greenland cannot be bought or taken,” Macron said, standing alongside Danish and Greenlandic leaders.

On the sidelines, Meloni and Merz pledged to hold a new intergovernmental summit in 2026 and discussed EU competitiveness and Middle East tensions. British PM Starmer and Meloni also conferred on Middle East stability and reaffirmed support for Ukraine.

Canadian PM Mike Carney, hosting the summit, emphasized the importance of diplomacy in navigating global crises. The two-day summit is seen as critical in shaping collective action on war, energy, and economic recovery.
