Guru Granth Sahib’s 421st Parkash Purab celebrated with Nagar Kirtan in Montreal

The 421st Parkash Purab of Shri Guru Granth Sahib was celebrated with great devotion and community spirit in Montreal, Canada, where Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha organized a Nagar Kirtan that brought together large numbers of devotees and members of the Indian diaspora.

The Parkash Purab marks the historic occasion in 1604 when the Adi Granth, later revered as Guru Granth Sahib, was first installed at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It is one of the most sacred observances in Sikh tradition, emphasizing the values of spiritual wisdom, humility, equality, and seva.

India’s Acting High Commissioner to Canada, Chinmoy Naik, attended the 17th annual Nagar Kirtan organized by Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha in Montreal on August 31. In his remarks, Naik highlighted the universal teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib, calling on the community to practice compassion, service, and unity in daily life.

The event featured devotional prayers, kirtan, and a procession that spread a sense of harmony across the city. For years, Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha has hosted the Montreal Nagar Kirtan, drawing people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate Sikh spirituality and heritage.

The celebrations in Montreal came just a day after the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, in collaboration with Om Media Group, organized Ganesh Utsav. The two-day cultural festival showcased Maharashtra’s rich traditions through music, dance, tourism exhibits, art and craft workshops, and stalls promoting Indian handlooms, handicrafts, and cuisine.

Together, these events underscored the vibrant cultural presence of the Indian diaspora in Canada, while also reflecting India’s diverse spiritual and cultural heritage.
