Harris Concludes Campaign Remarks, Promises a Protective Presidency

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed pride in serving as Vice President under Joe Biden but emphasized that her presidency would bring a different approach due to the unique challenges facing the nation.

Delivering her closing campaign argument on Tuesday from the Ellipse—a site of significance during the 2020 Capitol rally—Harris positioned herself as a protector of those treated unfairly, a value she attributes to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who was born in India.

Harris framed herself as an “uniter” in stark contrast to former President Trump, whom she characterized as a “divider.” She portrayed herself as a “champion of working people,” criticizing Trump for favoring tax breaks for the wealthy, and emphasized her commitment to national security, suggesting Trump is susceptible to manipulation by foreign leaders.

“I have been honoured to serve as Joe Biden’s Vice President,” Harris stated. “But I will bring my own experiences and ideas to the Oval Office. My presidency will be different because the challenges we face are different. Four years ago, our top priority was ending the pandemic and reviving the economy. Now, we must focus on lowering costs that were rising even before the pandemic.”

Harris acknowledged the difficulties of distancing herself from Biden while maintaining loyalty. While Trump and his campaign have pointed to Biden’s administration’s shortcomings, Harris’s campaign has sought to highlight her distinct vision, leading to separate appearances from Biden, though she has joined former President Barack Obama on the campaign trail.

Recognizing that many Americans may not know her well due to her long career outside Washington, Harris reflected on her background as a prosecutor and California’s top law officer. “I have always had an instinct to protect,” she said. “Seeing people treated unfairly or overlooked deeply affects me. My mother instilled in me a drive to hold accountable those who use wealth or power to take advantage of others, and to advocate for hard-working Americans who deserve a voice.”

In her nearly 30-minute speech, Harris stressed the contrasts between herself and Trump across values, vision, and foreign policy. “World leaders see Donald Trump as an easy target, easily manipulated by flattery or favors,” she warned. “Autocrats like Putin and Kim Jong-un are likely rooting for him in this election. I will always prioritize our security, advance our national interests, and ensure that the United States remains a champion of liberty worldwide.”
