Harvard takes legal action against Trump administration over visa policy
Harvard University has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration after being barred from enrolling international students. The move came a day after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the ban, citing Harvard’s alleged noncompliance with federal laws.
Harvard President Alan Garber called the decision retaliatory and unlawful, accusing the government of attacking the university’s academic independence. He said Harvard would seek a temporary restraining order and continue supporting its students.
The administration previously demanded sweeping reforms at Harvard, including eliminating alleged antisemitism and diversity initiatives. After Harvard refused, federal grants and contracts worth over $2 billion were frozen.
Over 27% of Harvard’s student body consists of international students, whose legal status is now at risk.
