Hindu temple in Australia defaced with racist graffiti, community outraged

A Hindu temple in Melbourne was defaced with racist graffiti in a disturbing incident that has sparked outrage among Australia’s Indian community and reignited concerns over rising hate crimes targeting minorities.

The Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Boronia, Victoria, was vandalised with hate-filled graffiti including the slur “Go Home” and derogatory references to skin color. Similar racist messages were found on two nearby Asian-owned restaurants and a healing centre.

Victoria Police confirmed they are investigating four linked incidents of vandalism in the Boronia and Bayswater areas that occurred overnight on July 21.

“Police are investigating following reports of graffiti… including a temple and two restaurants,” a police statement noted.

Makrand Bhagwat, President of the Hindu Council of Australia’s Victoria chapter, expressed deep dismay, saying, “Our temple is a sanctuary of peace. Seeing it vandalised with hateful words was heartbreaking.”

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan strongly condemned the attack, calling it “hateful, racist and deeply disturbing.”

“It wasn’t just vandalism — it was a deliberate act of hate… and it must be called out for what it is,” she said in a statement. “As Premier, I want you to know how much your contribution, your culture, and your faith mean to me.”

The temple incident follows another alarming case in Adelaide, where 23-year-old Indian student Charanpreet Singh was violently attacked by a group of men while out with his wife. The attackers used racial slurs and weapons during the assault, which was caught on video.

These attacks reflect a troubling pattern of racially motivated crimes in Australia, prompting community leaders and officials to demand stronger action and protections.
