IED found on busy highway in Jammu and Kashmir, traffic suspended for safety

On December 9, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) successfully detected an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, preventing a major tragedy. The device was found early in the morning in the Palhallan area, leading to the suspension of traffic on the busy highway. Local officials confirmed that the timely detection of the IED had averted what could have been a catastrophic attack.

After the IED was found, bomb disposal teams were quickly deployed to safely neutralize the device, and security forces worked to restore normal traffic flow on the highway. The operation involved teams from the 29 Rashtriya Rifles, Sashastra Seema Bal, and the local police.

In recent months, terrorists in J&K have increasingly used remote-controlled or pressure-triggered IEDs to target security forces and the army, especially on roads, streets, and highways. These devices have also been employed to target VIP convoys, heightening concerns about security in the region.

To safeguard the public and military personnel, the security forces conduct regular road clearance operations, known as Road Opening Parties (ROPs). These teams, equipped with advanced electronic devices and sniffer dogs, work to ensure the safety of normal traffic while clearing roads for military convoys and VIP movements.

The discovery of this IED comes at a time when tensions have been rising in the region. Following the successful and peaceful conduct of elections in J&K earlier this year, terrorists and their handlers across the border have become increasingly frustrated. In response, the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, has called for an aggressive anti-terror campaign aimed at dismantling the terror infrastructure in the region and targeting those who support or enable the attacks.
